Are your resolutions stalling?  3 Strategies to Get Back on Track!

Almost the end of the month – your monthly review may already be in.  Typically, at this point the elation and resolve has reduced mainly because of the reality of day-to-day challenges, life events and behavioural patterns that are entrenched and can sabotage good intentions.

If, like many your resolutions are dwindling on the pile of the great undone and are likely to remain as nothing more than wistful thinking on your to do list for the rest of the year – do not despair.  According to research only 16 % of people can follow through on their resolutions. Most people fail within one to six weeks.

The way we frame resolutions might be the problem. If you set them out as a series of broad vague goals without analysing the ‘why’, you may fail to make any progress.

If you set goals as a series of goals that make you think of deprivation, you will eventually give up. It’s also difficult to make progress with goals that are too broad. So, to get back on track, here are 3 strategies that can help:

1.     Go back to the drawing board and rewrite your motivations for change.

2.     Define your resolutions as clearly as possible as achievements and link these to rewards

3.     Break down your goals into SMART objectives, i.e., break then down so that they can be tracked.

What does this mean in practical terms?  - The ‘clarity continuum check in method’

1.     CLARIFY

The ‘clarity continuum check in method’ is a process of defining and reclarifying what you want to achieve and why? For example, a resolution to focus more on personal development is simply  too broad. You’ll need to home in on your ‘why’. Is this to change career, develop a new skill of start a new business or grow your business?  What type of results do you want to see? Keep questioning and clarifying your why and what change looks like for you.

2.     REWARD

How will you keep going when the going gets tough, or when your enthusiasm wanes? This is where setting some rewards for accomplishing milestones towards your resolution helps you on your journey.

3.     MEASURE & SET TIMELINES

The next questions are about measuring your achievements.  Key questions are, how will you know you have succeeded? Will you complete an accredited course?  Attend a number of workshops? What achievements do you want? When do you what to accomplish these? We may be familiar with using SMART goal setting in our businesses and project management roles but they’re good for all types of development work including personal development. A SMART objectives framework is a great tool to measure and track your progress for your resolutions. It also helps set you frame them as clear goals that can be broken down so that they are: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and anchored within a Time Frame.
